On 5 August, in the village of Rupkalviai, Šilutė district, one of the most original summer events took place – the Lithuania’s Scythe Mowing Championship. The Mowers of the Year were selected here, for the fastest and best quality scything. The most intriguing nomination, the Male Scythe Mower of the Year, came as a surprise – the title went to local Arūnas Kakta, who beat his teammate Kozmas Auškalnis, who had won for two years in a row. Dovilė Staponkienė, who returned to the competition after a year’s break, won the Female Scythe Mower of the Year again. The championship had the surprise of the presence of four of the best mowers from Poland, who were happy to invite everyone to participate in the 18th yearly competition of the same nature in the Biebrza National Park.
MORE THAN 30 MEN AND 10 WOMEN COMPETED IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP
Nearly 50 participants from Šilutė, Plungė, Klaipėda, Kaunas, Alytus, Šiauliai, Vilnius, and other districts gathered in the village of Rupkalviai with their scythes and were accompanied by passionate support teams. A particularly large group came from Kėdainiai – almost a busload of mowers and their supporters. The „Švendubrė“ team from Dzūkija, who were in high spirits, surprised everyone again with their special attention to clothing and authentic details. For example, the team wore old Lithuanian traditional shoes for the competition.
„We are very happy that the Scythe Mowing Championship has attracted such a huge fan base, which continues to grow every year. There were both true professionals and complete novices who were holding a scythe for the first time. In the Scythe Mower of the Year competition, the intrigue remained until the very last moments, with everyone eager to see whether the title of Best Male Mower of the Year would go to the same person for the third year in a row. The battles were honourable and hard-fought, with the participants taking the events really seriously and with excitement. One of the most anticipated highlights of the championship is the friendly scything swath, which brings together the participants to show them a snippet of the old hay harvest. This year, as many as forty-four scythe mowers took part,“ says Žymantas Morkvėnas, the initiator of the Lithuania’s Scythe Mowing Championship and a conservationist.
