Our initiative “Guarding Earth” in the spotlight of GIS experts and users from all over the world

GIS (geographic information system) user conference is taking place in San Diego, USA July 12-16th (click here for more information). This event which is organized by ESRI (the creator of GIS) brought together more than 13,000 participants representing companies that take environmental issues professionally.

Our initiative of “Guarding Earth” is also presented in this conference together with the results achieved by it and possibilities for the society to contribute to the environmental protection directly. On July 14th Zymantas Morkvenas will present the initiative and invite other countries to join it. From this day on our initiative which was widely known as “Report on Environmental Problem” will have a new name in English  and will be called “Guarding Earth”. Although the official opening of the conference is on July 12th, future visions of GIS are presented to leaders of different countries and experts in an event called “Senior Executive Seminar” taking place a day before the conference opening ceremony. The event will bring together individuals who make decisions by using GIS technology.

It is important to notice that special attention was given to Lithuania during a theme discussion – Jack Dangermond, the president of ESRI, presented “Guarding Earth” as a perfect example when society participates in salving environmental problems by providing useful data. Participants of the discussion highlighted the fact that different governmental institutions of the world appreciate and admire the new technological possibilities of GIS which enables them to share the collected data with the society and know the world and its changes better. In the mean time, our initiative stands for a reverse case when the society gathers and compiles data which makes influence to the governmental institutions by giving them an opportunity to collect information and act in an efficient way. This is also a great example of how society can contribute to the work of responsible authorities by promoting cooperative action in salving real problems.
